The airplane was substantially damaged during a forced landing at 1549 Hawaiian time following a loss of engine power. The private pilot was seriously injured; his passenger received minor injuries. Visual conditions prevailed. The pilot later said that, immediately after departure, the windscreen became covered with oil. He turned back towards the airport and the engine lost power. He landed in the grass between the runways. The airplanes nose landing gear separated, the firewall was buckled, and the right wings outboard four feet was crushed aft.
