Feb. 8, Zion, Ill. / Zlin 242L and Cessna 172

At 15:04 CST, a Zlin 242L and a Cessna 172P collided over Zion, approximately two miles from the approach end of runway 23 at Waukegan Regional Airport. The two occupants of the Zlin were killed and the plane crashed onto the roof of a hospital. The student pilot in the 172 also was killed. The Zlin was on a cross-country flight that originated at Sheboygan, Wis., and was en route to Waukegan. The 172 was on a local training flight that originated at Waukegan.
