At about 1030 Pacific time, the airplane was involved in a forced landing following a total loss of engine power. The airline transport pilot was uninjured; the commercial pilot receiving instruction sustained minor injuries. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the tail and fuselage. Visual conditions prevailed. The instructor pilot reported the engine started running rough as the flight returned to its departure point. Soon, all power was lost. The instructor made a forced landing on a golf course fairway. During the landing roll, the airplane came to rest in a sand trap and nosed over. A large amount of oil was covering the underside of the airplane. A preliminary examination revealed a broken engine oil return line.
