At about 1600 Pacific time, the airplane collided with trees during the landing approach. The airline transport pilot sustained serious injuries; the airplane was substantially damaged. Visual conditions prevailed. As he approached the downwind leg of the runway he decided to divert to the opposite runway. As he maneuvered for landing, the airplane struck a tree.
