Fuel Pump Problems

The following information is derived from the FAA’s Service Difficulty Reports and Aviation Maintenance Alerts.

Cessna T182T Turbo Skylane

Defective Fuel Pump

The aircraft was inbound when the engine began to lose power. The pilot used the fuel boost pump to keep the engine running and landed without incident. The engine ran fine at idle on the ground. With the engine off and the fuel selector turned on, fuel ran freely out of the fuel pump drain line. The defective fuel pump (p/n 201F5008) was replaced.

Defective Fuel Pumps

Engine would not perform properly during engine start and idle operations. Installed four successive defective new engine-driven fuel pumps (p/n 200F5006) at direction of field technician. Finally received manufacturer approval to install a different pump (p/n RG9080J8A/M), which fixed the problems.

Leaking Electric Fuel Pump

During routine maintenance, a blue stain was found in the aircraft’s belly in the area of the electric fuel pump. The fuel pump (p/n 53670001) was removed and found to be leaking fuel internally.

Failed Fuel Pump

Engine quit during takeoff. After considerable troubleshooting it was discovered that the engine driven fuel pump was affected by AD 93-11-11. The pump exhibited all the symptoms and failures the AD note addressed. Installed a factory-new fuel pump and the engine performed normally.

Worn Pump Drive Coupling

Fuel flow was erratic, with a slight fuel leak from pump drains. Inspection revealed debris in servo screens. Teardown report showed drive couplings pitted, blades and liners scored, rotors worn. Debris in servo filter appeared to be pieces of the liner. Replaced both pumps. (The same engine-driven fuel pumps (p/n 200F5002) were installed new at engine overhaul. They were replaced at 372 hours and 389.7 hours. The pumps removed had 776.3 and 794.0 hours.

Leaking Fuel Pump

During an annual inspection, the engine-driven fuel pump was found to be leaking fuel from the relief valve gasket. Fuel was also found in the upper deck pressure lines at the pump. A service bulletin references the exact same problem and includes the part number (200F5002) of this pump but not its serial number.
