At 14:45 MDT, a Piper PA-32R-300 crashed when it overran the runway after an aborted takeoff at the Custer County Airport. A post-crash fire consumed the airplane but only one of the four people aboard suffered minor injuries. The pilot said that they were making an intersection takeoff on runway 26, which left about 3,800 feet for takeoff. During the takeoff roll the pilot attempted to abort the takeoff, but did not apply the brakes until the airplane was off of the prepared surface. The pilot said that after the airplane stopped, the occupants all got out and unloaded their baggage. Moments later, the airplane caught on fire. Inspectors could find no pre-crash anomalies.
